Privacy Policy
Last updated
The short version: your original file never leaves your device. We transcribe compressed audio, delete it immediately and never store your transcripts. We don't sell data and we don't use your recordings to train AI.
Your recordings
- On your device: when you choose or record a file, your browser decodes it locally and converts the speech to compressed 16 kHz mono audio parts of up to about two minutes each. Your original file, including any video, is never uploaded.
- Transcription: each audio part is sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) to our server, which passes it to our speech-to-text provider and returns the text. Audio is held in memory only while it's processed. We do not write it to disk or keep a copy.
- Speech-to-text provider: we use third-party speech-recognition APIs (such as Groq, OpenAI, Deepgram or AssemblyAI) configured so your audio is not used to train their models (where a provider offers an opt-out, we use it). Some providers may keep request data for a limited period for abuse monitoring under their own policies; where a provider supports it, we request deletion immediately after processing.
- Transcripts: the free tool doesn't store transcripts. They exist only in your browser tab; when you close or reload it they're gone, so download what you need. Premium accounts can choose to keep a 30-day history, which you can delete at any time.
What we do collect
- A strictly necessary cookie (
rtt_cid) with a random ID, used only to enforce the free daily limits. It contains no personal information and expires after 30 days. - Usage counters: how many files and minutes were transcribed per cookie ID and IP address today. These counters expire automatically within about 25 hours.
- Security data: IP address and basic request information, kept briefly in server logs to prevent abuse.
- If you contact us or buy Premium: your name, email and the message you send; payment details are handled by our payment provider and never reach our servers.
We don't use advertising cookies. If we enable analytics, we use a cookieless, privacy-friendly service that doesn't track you across sites.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example, California under the CCPA/CPRA, or the EU/UK under the GDPR) you can ask to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you. Because we don't store recordings or free-tier transcripts, there is usually nothing to delete. Email support@recordingtotext.com or use the contact form.
Children
This service is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.
